THE GARDEN ANT (LASIUS NIGER)
Worker Ants 4-7mm long often found foraging for food. Adult Ants can be found in any season, but are most conspicuous from May to August. The workers are sterile females. The queen lays eggs in spring or summer that develop into winged males and winged fertile females.
BIOLOGY:
Ants live in colonies and the function of their nest is to provide a protected and controlled environment in which to raise the young. The Queen ants lives for as long as fifteen years and the workers may live as long as six years. During the summer, the winged males and winged fertile queens take flight and mate. After mating the males die and the queens either shed or bite off their wings.
The Queen attempts to start a colony by first finding a suitable nest site, laying eggs, then raising the young until they mature into adults. A nest will steadily develop over several years. |
