VINE WEEVIL (OTIORHYCHUS SULCATUS)
This insect is dark brown or black in colour and has fine yellow speckles on its back, it appears dusty. The adult is 8 to 10 mm and is flightless.
Biology
This insect is a nuisance pest for Gardeners, Allotment Owners and Commercial Farm Nurseries, due to the damage caused by the grubs to the roots of plants. The eggs laid throughout the summer develop into larvae (grubs) which burrow into the roots to feed.
Adults feed on the edges of leaves during the summer, generally April to August, causing notching on the outer part of the leaves. The beetles are very good at walking and climbing and can be found in hanging baskets and wall boxes. They can appear dead when disturbed and are sometimes transported by hitching a ride on the leaves
