HABITAT: Outside under leaves, logs, stones and on the ground. Entering into properties living in cool dark areas.

GROUND BEETLE (CARABIDAE)

Various ground beetle species wander into properties. They are generally shiny black from 12 to 35mm in length. Often found in the summer months entering properties at night through small openings around doors and windows.

BIOLOGY:

Most of these beetles are predators on other insects which crawl around on the ground at night. Adults can live for 2-4 years. Prevention control consists of removing objects under which ground beetles can hide during the day from within several feet of the buildings perimeter. Changing exterior lighting from white to less attractive yellow can also assist. The application of an insecticidal applied professionally maybe necessary. The insect is often mistaken for a cockroach by the untrained eye. (see cable bug).
